Justin Lim is a Malaysian-born artist with huge potential. Within a few years, he has risen through the ranks to be considered one of Malaysia’s great artists, with endorsements from the likes of the assistant director of Singapore Art Museum and more. Upon graduation in 2006 with a Master of Art (Fine Art) qualification from the Open University UK, he immediately began to gain recognition in the region. In 2007, he was the Artist-in-Residence at TAKSU, Kuala Lumpur, and in 2008, he was awarded the Malaysia-Australia Visual Artist Residency at Rimbun Dahan, Malaysia.
Whilst his more conventional pop art culture pieces initially gave him the demand and recognition he was searching for, his work is often much deeper and darker than initially meets the eye. His work tends to explore the connections between existence, politics, religion and our contemporary social context, as seen in his exhibition ‘Gods, Heroes and Myths’. He cleverly interweaves different imagery and concepts into each piece, creating artwork within the artwork. He uses his artwork to question perceptions and events, and whilst not entirely controversial, raises uncomfortable questions and truths about the politics and social situation in Malaysia. He commonly explores themes such as manipulation, power and religion to probe the public’s perception and raise awareness.
Keep an eye out for this artist, he is carrying Malaysia’s art scene on his shoulders.
